RaySafe™ 452 Radiation Survey Meter

Spend more time on measurements and less time on settings. Just turn on the instrument and within a few seconds you are ready to measure. The RaySafe 452 does not require any corrections or manual settings, letting you focus on radiation protection rather than set-up.

The intuitive interface shows all parameters in one view. All measurement data is stored automatically, and the included PC software, RaySafe View, provides easy data transfer for further analysis and data storage.

One device for every situation means less to carry, learn and manage. That equals less expense, more efficiency and time savings.

RaySafe 452 essentials

  • Large display:
Intuitive user interface with easy to view parameters in bright daylight and dark environments. All parameters in one display for overview and easily accessible settings.

  • Fast response time
: The dose sensitive Geiger-Müller pancake enables a fast response time even at very low dose rates while the silicon diodes provide accuracy and speed at higher dose rates.

  • Convenient data storage
: The dose rate value is automatically saved every second providing comfort not to lose data and enabling measurement analysis at a later stage. The data can be transferred to PC with the software.

  • Sensitive, stable sensors
: Silicon diodes combined with an energy compensated Geiger-Muller pancake provide high sensitivity and stability over a very wide energy and dose rate range.

  • Worry free
: Wipe the instrument with a wet cloth or wash under rinsing water thanks to the IP64 classification. The durability and wide temperature range also makes indoor and outdoor measurements possible without worrying about the instrument.

Can I use the RaySafe 452 to measure neutron radiation?

No, the RaySafe 452 is not sensitive to neutrons.

I have a peak in my dose rate log, much higher than the expected dose rate from my measurements. Why?

Most likely, your instrument has detected a muon. A muon is a high energy particle from space. It is detected by the RaySafe 452 as a 1-2 seconds long pulse with a dose rate that is approximately 100 times the background level.

At sea level, the RaySafe 452 typically detects one or two muons per day. At higher altitudes, for example when travelling by air, the number of detected muons increases to hundreds per day.

Can I use the RaySafe 452 for long-term measurements, like area monitoring?

Yes, the RaySafe 452 is suitable for long-term measurements.

Some tips to consider:

  • Position the RaySafe 452 with the round, flat surface towards the potential radiation source. There is a tripod screw thread at the end of the handle that can be used for fixed positioning.
  • The battery lasts for up to 100 hours. Connect the supplied charger for sessions longer than that.
  • After powered on for 24 hours, the instrument automatically stores a measurement and starts a new one. You are notified about the start of a new measurement with a symbol on the screen. Press the center button to confirm.
  • The instrument has a one-second resolution dose rate log with a capacity of up to 10 days. If you need a one-second resolution log for a longer period, you can import and store the measurements in RaySafe View (PC software), for example on a weekly basis. Alternatively, you can perform the measurements with the instrument connected to a computer running RaySafe View. Then, the one-second resolution is not restricted in time, since all measurements are automatically imported to RaySafe View. As a bonus, the battery in the RaySafe 452 is charged from the computer.

Note: There is no auto save functionality in RaySafe View, why we recommend you to manually save the RaySafe View file every now and then to avoid loss of data.

My RaySafe 452 shows an error message when I try to measure contamination (without lid). Why?

If you see an error like this, you have an instrument model without the counter functionality. The model that can measure without lid is denoted RaySafe 452. An instrument with model name RaySafe 452 Ambient or RaySafe 452 Air kerma requires a lid to measure. See the model name on the label of your instrument.

Do I need to calibrate my RaySafe 452?

We recommend a yearly calibration of the RaySafe 452 and offer service programs. The calibration date is printed on the lid(s). Note that the RaySafe 452 must be calibrated together with its specific lids.

Can I use the RaySafe 452 for isotope identification?

No. The RaySafe 452 measures the mean photon energy of the complete spectrum, including scattered radiation, and is not able to quantify the energy of specific spectral peaks. The mean energy parameter is meant to be used more as a rough estimate for radiation protection purposes.

Does the RaySafe 452 need specific documentation to be transported by air?

No, you can ship the RaySafe 452 by air without extra paper work. Some survey meters, like the Fluke 451P and other similar instruments, are pressurized and classified as hazardous material.

The RaySafe 452 is not pressurized and is therefore not classified as hazardous material.
